I’d recently did this painting 10×12 in oil, decided to upscale to 16×20 in oil.
Also with the final painting, I have progress pictures of the painting in various stages.
Started with a sketch using thinner and raw umber.
Laid down some of the colours in a thin wash; moving around the canvas pretty quickly and putting down thinned paint without too much regard to accuracy. This helps establish your values and colour schemes with the overall painting. You can better judge values and colours when they are put together on the canvas, and you can always adjust them. So at this stage I’m working pretty loose and I’m not concerned about getting the values or colour just right.
I start laying down darker values first and work the background to the foreground. At this stage I’m also using medium with the turps.
